Several times throughout the year, July 4th,  Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, we pause, and remember the sacrifices made, too often taken for granted.  Likewise, where we live, it’s easy to walk right past our Jewish history.  Jewish Holidays are a time to recess and be mindful of those who paid, and pay a price, for the people we are so blessed to be.  And like our American holidays, we can also have some fun in the process.  We’re a minority in our town, our country, and so, the calendar doesn’t stop for us.  It requires intentionality on our part.  Another reason Jewish community is so important…

Seven opportunities to remember…

  • Rosh Hashannah

    Tashlikh at the beach on Erev... a little unusual… dinner around a fire pit… the sight of the sun setting, sounds of the waves crashing… a majestic way to ring in a new year…

  • Yom Kippur

    It’s common to read the Book of Jonah (and the Whale) on Yom Kippur... a great read… a BBQ to usher in Kol Nidre… Sitting under the stars, hearing that song… so moving…

  • Sukkot

    Eating outdoors is always nice… doing so with purpose during Sukkot is extra special… a glass of lemonade, marveling in the trees above and a forty-year trek… spectacular!

  • Hanukkah

    We’ve had hilarious Dreidel games…. lots of laughs… Latkes… Gifts… Jelly Doughnuts too... Judah & The Maccabees… a timely reminder of our special place in God’s heart!

  • Purim

    Jewish Halloween….mask up (or costume) and play games… a fun holiday!   Esther on Purim, Ruth on Shavuot… two amazing women paved the way for all we are today…

  • Passover

    A communal seder is like nothing else…so connecting to our roots…you’re never too old to find the afikomen… Have more than four questions?  Some great discussion…

  • Shavuot

    It’s customary to eat dairy on Shavuot as the jews received Torah on their way to the land of milk & honey… a pizza party…blintzes…cheesecake for dessert. Yum Yum Yum!
